Sugar Consumption and Health
Anderson, G. Harvey
Abstract
The scientific understanding of the relationship between total sugars in the diet, particularly, added sugars, and health of the population has changed in the past 10 to 15 years. In North America, in then late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, sugar was denounced as a health hazard in numerous books and an endless stream of article targeted at consumer. In the 1980s, this outlook was examined closely by scientists and was found insupportable. At intakes of approximately 10-12% of energy, added sugar is not the cause of chronic or acute diseases, other than dental caries. Countries with lower intakes should focus on other components of the diet when developing food-based dietary guidance for their population.
